Used as an anticoagulant to reduce the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), particularly in adult patients hospitalized for acute medical illnesses who are at risk for blood clots due to limited mobility and other factors. It is especially considered in patients who may not be suitable for shorter-acting injectable anticoagulants. Betrixaban maleate inhibits Factor Xa in the coagulation cascade, preventing the formation of thrombin and reducing the potential for dangerous clot formation in deep veins, such as in the legs, which could lead to pulmonary embolism. Its extended half-life allows for once-daily oral dosing, improving convenience and compliance in a hospital setting.
