Used primarily in the treatment of certain cancers, especially ovarian and breast cancers associated with BRCA gene mutations. It works by inhibiting PARP enzymes, which are involved in DNA repair. By blocking these enzymes, the drug causes cancer cells with existing DNA repair defects to die, a concept known as synthetic lethality. It is also used in treating prostate and pancreatic cancers with specific genetic mutations. Administered orally, it offers a targeted therapy approach with fewer side effects compared to traditional chemotherapy.
