Used as a building block in the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to its rigid, planar structure and ability to coordinate with metal ions. Its cis-configuration allows for unique framework geometries that are useful in gas storage and separation applications. Also employed in photoresponsive materials because of its reversible photoisomerization behavior under UV light, making it suitable for smart materials and optical switches. Additionally, it finds use in the development of fluorescent sensors and dyes where controlled emission properties are required.
