Used as a solvatochromic probe to measure solvent polarity in chemical and biochemical systems. Its color change in different solvents allows researchers to determine empirical polarity values (ET(30)). Applied in studies of micelles, membranes, ionic liquids, and polymer solutions to assess microenvironment polarity. Also utilized in photochemistry and spectroscopy for calibrating solvent effects on dye behavior.
