Used in organic synthesis as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. Acts as a building block in the preparation of bioactive molecules due to the presence of reactive functional groups (chloro and nitro). Employed in the development of liquid crystals and optical materials because of its conjugated structure. Also investigated for use in sunscreen formulations owing to its ability to absorb UV radiation.
