Used as a fluorescent probe in biochemical and biophysical studies due to its ability to intercalate into DNA. It is employed in assays to detect nucleic acids and monitor DNA conformational changes. Also serves as a building block in the synthesis of antimalarial and anticancer agents. Applied in the development of sensors for metal ions and small molecules because of its strong fluorescence response upon binding. Found in some antimicrobial formulations and studied for its potential in photodynamic therapy.
