description Product Description
Terbinafine hydrochloride is widely used as an antifungal agent, primarily in the treatment of dermatological infections. It is effective against a variety of fungi, including dermatophytes, which cause conditions such as athlete’s foot, jock itch, and ringworm. The compound works by inhibiting the enzyme squalene epoxidase, disrupting fungal cell membrane synthesis, leading to cell death.
It is commonly formulated in topical preparations like creams, gels, and sprays for localized skin infections. Oral formulations are used for more severe or widespread infections, including onychomycosis (fungal nail infection), where topical treatments are less effective due to poor nail penetration. Its ability to accumulate in the skin, hair, and nails makes it particularly suitable for long-term treatment of chronic fungal infections.
Due to its fungicidal action, rather than just fungistatic, terbinafine hydrochloride offers faster clearance of infection and lower recurrence rates in many cases. It is generally well-tolerated, making it a preferred choice in both short-term and prolonged antifungal therapy.
