Used primarily to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), it helps improve urine flow by relaxing smooth muscle in the prostate and bladder neck. The relaxation is due to selective blockade of alpha-1 adrenergic receptors. It reduces urinary urgency, frequency, and hesitancy. Also used in the management of kidney stones by facilitating stone passage through ureteral relaxation. Commonly prescribed for men with lower urinary tract symptoms. Minimal effect on blood pressure due to high selectivity for alpha-1A receptors.
