Used primarily as an antibiotic in the treatment of bacterial infections, especially tuberculosis. It works by inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis, effectively stopping the growth of bacteria. Commonly administered in combination with other antimycobacterial agents to prevent resistance development. Also used in the management of leprosy and in some cases of prophylaxis for contacts of meningococcal disease. Available in oral, intravenous, and topical formulations depending on the infection type and severity.
