description Product Description
Used primarily as a skin-lightening agent in cosmetic and dermatological products to treat hyperpigmentation, melasma, and age spots. It works by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production, thereby reducing darkening of the skin. Commonly found in creams, serums, and lotions, it is available in over-the-counter formulations at lower concentrations and in prescription-strength products for more severe pigmentation issues.
Also employed in photography as a developing agent, where it reduces exposed silver halides to metallic silver in black-and-white film processing. Its reducing properties make it effective in this role, providing high image contrast and fine grain.
In industrial applications, it serves as a polymerization inhibitor, preventing premature curing or polymerization of monomers such as acrylates, methacrylates, and vinyl compounds during storage and transport. Acts as a radical scavenger, stopping chain reactions that lead to polymerization.
Additionally used as an antioxidant in rubber, oils, and fats to prevent oxidative degradation. Its ability to donate hydrogen atoms makes it effective in neutralizing free radicals, extending shelf life and maintaining material integrity.
