Used primarily to treat hyperlipidemia, particularly high triglyceride levels and low HDL cholesterol. It helps reduce the risk of pancreatitis in patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia. Often prescribed when lifestyle changes like diet and exercise are insufficient. Works by decreasing triglyceride production in the liver and enhancing the removal of triglyceride-rich particles from the blood. May also modestly increase HDL ("good") cholesterol. Typically used in long-term management of lipid disorders, but not primarily for lowering LDL cholesterol.
