Used primarily in chemotherapy, this compound is effective in treating metastatic melanoma, often in combination with other agents. It is also utilized in the treatment of Hodgkin’s lymphoma as part of the ABVD regimen (along with doxorubicin, vinblastine, and bleomycin). The compound functions by alkylating DNA and disrupting nucleic acid synthesis, leading to cytotoxic effects on rapidly dividing cancer cells. It may be used in certain cases of soft tissue sarcomas and is sometimes part of conditioning regimens before stem cell transplantation. Due to its mechanism, it requires careful monitoring for myelosuppression and hepatotoxicity.
