Carbimazole is primarily used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland produces excessive amounts of thyroid hormones. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of these hormones, specifically by blocking the enzyme thyroid peroxidase, which is involved in the production of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). This helps to normalize hormone levels and alleviate symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, weight loss, tremors, and anxiety. It is commonly prescribed for patients with Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder that is the most frequent cause of hyperthyroidism.
