Used primarily in the treatment and prevention of influenza A virus infections, particularly in outbreak settings. It works by inhibiting viral replication, specifically by blocking the M2 ion channel of the influenza A virus, preventing uncoating of the virus inside host cells. Also employed in the management of Parkinson’s disease and drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms due to its effects on dopamine release and receptor sensitivity in the central nervous system. Has been explored for use in certain neurodegenerative conditions and as an adjunct in treating fatigue in multiple sclerosis.
