It is effective in controlling diseases like tuberculosis in animals and is sometimes used in combination with other antibiotics to enhance efficacy and reduce resistance development. Due to its ototoxic and nephrotoxic potential, its use in humans is limited and largely replaced by safer alternatives. Also employed in some cell culture applications to prevent bacterial contamination.
