Used in the manufacture of specialty glasses and ceramics due to its ability to modify refractive index and thermal expansion properties. Employed in some optical coatings and laser materials where transparency in the ultraviolet range is required. Also investigated for use in radiation detection and shielding applications because of lead’s high density and atomic number. Historically used in certain phosphors and scintillation counters, though its use is limited today due to toxicity concerns.
