It helps maintain a stable pH environment, preventing nucleic acid degradation by protecting against nuclease activity and chemical hydrolysis. Due to its ability to chelate magnesium ions—essential cofactors for nucleases—it effectively inhibits enzyme activity that could break down nucleic acids. TE buffer is commonly used after DNA extraction, in DNA sequencing, PCR setup, and hybridization procedures.
