Used as a biocide in industrial water treatment systems, particularly in oilfield operations to control bacterial growth in drilling fluids and production waters. Effective against sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) that cause microbial-induced corrosion and H2S production. Also employed as a preservative in water-based polymer emulsions and latex systems due to its stability under high temperature and pH extremes. Shows utility in agricultural formulations as a fungicide and in cooling tower treatments to prevent biofouling. Its methyl and bromine substitutions enhance lipid solubility, improving penetration into microbial cells.
