Used as a building block in the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to its multiple coordination sites from carboxylic acid and hydroxyl groups. Its rigid terphenyl backbone helps create porous structures with high surface areas, suitable for gas storage, separation, and catalysis. Also investigated for use in proton-conductive materials for fuel cell applications because of its ability to form hydrogen-bonded networks. Shows potential in supramolecular chemistry for designing functional materials with tailored properties.
