Used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection as part of antiretroviral therapy. It is an integrase inhibitor that blocks the viral enzyme integrase, preventing the integration of viral DNA into the host cell genome. This action reduces the amount of virus in the body and helps restore immune function. Commonly prescribed in combination with other antiretroviral drugs for both treatment-naive and treatment-experienced patients. It has a high genetic barrier to resistance, making it effective even in some drug-resistant cases. Also used in prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV when given during pregnancy.
