Used as a cough suppressant in the treatment of dry, non-productive coughs. It acts centrally on the cough center in the medulla to reduce the urge to cough. Commonly found in over-the-counter cold and cough medications. Has antihistaminic and mild sedative effects, which can help with sleep and reduce coughing at night. Not intended for use with productive coughs where mucus expulsion is needed.
