Used as a cough suppressant in the treatment of dry and non-productive coughs. It acts centrally on the cough center in the medulla to reduce the urge to cough. Commonly found in over-the-counter and prescription cough syrups, especially for acute bronchitis and other respiratory conditions where cough control is needed. It is favored for its relatively fast onset and mild sedative effect compared to other antitussives.
