Bilastine is primarily used as a second-generation antihistamine for the treatment of allergic conditions. It is effective in managing symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, nasal itching, runny nose, and itchy or watery eyes. Due to its rapid onset of action and high selectivity for peripheral H1 receptors, it provides quick relief with minimal sedative effects. Bilastine is also indicated for the treatment of chronic idiopathic urticaria, helping to reduce itching and the appearance of hives. Its favorable safety profile and lack of significant drug interactions make it suitable for long-term use in adults and adolescents. Unlike some other antihistamines, bilastine does not cross the blood-brain barrier extensively, which contributes to its low potential for drowsiness.
