Befetupitant is primarily used in the prevention of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV). It is a neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor antagonist, which works by blocking the action of substance P, a neurotransmitter involved in the vomiting reflex. This makes it particularly effective when combined with other antiemetic agents, such as 5-HT3 receptor antagonists and corticosteroids, to provide comprehensive protection against both acute and delayed phases of CINV. It is especially beneficial for patients undergoing highly emetogenic chemotherapy regimens, such as those containing cisplatin or anthracyclines. Additionally, its long half-life allows for convenient dosing, often requiring only a single administration prior to chemotherapy, which improves patient compliance and reduces the burden of frequent medication intake.
