Used primarily as an oral hypoglycemic agent in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It helps lower blood glucose levels by decreasing hepatic glucose production, reducing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues. Enhances glucose uptake and utilization by muscle and fat cells. Was commonly prescribed before newer biguanides like metformin became preferred due to better safety profiles. Its use has declined significantly due to higher risk of lactic acidosis compared to other drugs in the same class.
