Used in the treatment of bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Gram-negative bacteria. Effective against urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, and certain gastrointestinal infections. Shows good tissue penetration, making it useful in treating deep-seated infections. Also active against some strains of Mycobacterium, including those involved in tuberculosis, especially in combination therapy. Employed when other antibiotics fail due to resistance. Available in oral and intravenous forms for flexible dosing in outpatient and hospital settings.
