description Product Description
Daptomycin is a powerful antibiotic used primarily to treat serious Gram-positive bacterial infections. It is especially effective against strains that are resistant to other antibiotics, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). The drug works by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane, leading to rapid loss of membrane potential and cell death.
It is commonly administered intravenously for systemic infections such as complicated skin and soft tissue infections, bloodstream infections (bacteremia), and right-sided infective endocarditis caused by susceptible organisms. Due to its unique mechanism of action, daptomycin is often used when other antibiotic therapies fail or are unsuitable.
Because it is inactivated by pulmonary surfactant, daptomycin is not used for the treatment of pneumonia. Its use is generally reserved for hospital settings under close medical supervision due to the severity of the infections it targets and the need for intravenous delivery.
