Used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, especially those caused by anaerobic bacteria and certain Gram-positive organisms. Commonly prescribed for skin infections, respiratory tract infections, and bone/joint infections. Frequently used when patients are allergic to penicillin. Also effective in treating acne when applied topically in gels or lotions. Used in dental procedures to prevent or treat infections. Sometimes used to treat infections in the abdomen and female reproductive tract. Not effective against viral infections.
