Pristinamycin is primarily used as an antibiotic in veterinary medicine and human healthcare, particularly effective against Gram-positive bacteria. It is commonly applied in the treatment of respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and other conditions caused by susceptible strains of Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, including some methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains. Due to its unique mechanism of action—inhibiting protein synthesis by binding to the bacterial ribosome—it is often used as an alternative when other antibiotics fail or resistance develops. Pristinamycin is especially valuable in cases where penicillin or macrolide resistance is a concern.
