polyphenol compound found in green tea that has tremendous topical benefits
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a polyphenol compound found in green tea that has tremendous topical benefits.
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has low solubility in water. ActiveRelease™ EGCG is an encapsulated version of EGCG that can well dissolve in water, and also increase the permeation into skin. The release profile is gradual - up to 8 hours into the skin.
Here are some of the potential topical benefits of EGCG:
1. Anti-aging properties:
EGCG has been found to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help protect the skin from damage caused by environmental stressors and slow down the aging process. A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that a topical EGCG formulation improved skin elasticity and reduced the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in human subjects (1).

2. Photoprotective effects:
EGCG has been shown to have photoprotective properties, meaning it can help protect the skin from damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. A study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that a topical EGCG formulation reduced the risk of sunburn and other signs of UV-induced skin damage in human subjects (2).

3. Anti-inflammatory and anti-acne properties:
EGCG has been found to have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, which may make it useful for the treatment of acne. A study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology showed that a topical EGCG formulation was effective in reducing the severity of acne lesions in human subjects (3).

4. Skin brightening effects:
EGCG has been shown to have inhibitory effects on tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in the production of melanin, which may help improve skin brightness and reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation. A study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science found that a topical EGCG formulation improved skin brightness and reduced the appearance of age spots in human subjects (4).
