Used primarily as an intermediate in the production of other chlorinated hydrocarbons, especially trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene. It serves in the synthesis of pesticides and as a solvent for resins, fats, oils, and waxes in industrial cleaning processes. Also found in metal degreasing operations and as a component in some paint removers and varnish strippers. Its use has declined due to toxicity and environmental concerns, but it still appears in limited specialty chemical manufacturing and laboratory applications as a reagent or reference standard.
