Used primarily in veterinary medicine as an antiprotozoal agent, especially for treating infections caused by Trichomonas and Histomonas species in poultry and other birds. It is effective in controlling histomoniasis (also known as blackhead disease) in turkeys and chickens, helping reduce mortality and improve flock health. Also used in some cases to treat giardia and other anaerobic protozoal infections in companion animals like dogs and cats. Due to its mode of action against anaerobic organisms, it may be included in combination therapies for gastrointestinal infections. Not approved for use in food-producing animals in many countries due to potential toxicity and residue concerns.
