Used primarily as a radiocontrast agent in medical imaging procedures. It is administered intravenously or orally to enhance the visibility of blood vessels, organs, and other internal structures during X-ray examinations, including angiography, urography, and computed tomography (CT) scans. Its high iodine content provides excellent contrast due to strong X-ray absorption. Diatrizoic acid is water-soluble and rapidly excreted by the kidneys, making it suitable for diagnostic use with relatively low risk of tissue accumulation. Often formulated in combination with other agents to reduce viscosity and improve patient tolerance.
