Used primarily as a radiocontrast agent in medical imaging procedures. It is administered intravenously or orally to enhance the visibility of blood vessels, organs, and internal structures during X-ray examinations, including angiography, urography, and computed tomography (CT) scans. Its high iodine content provides excellent contrast by absorbing X-rays, allowing clear differentiation between tissues and fluid-filled spaces. Due to its water solubility and rapid renal excretion, it is effective for visualizing the urinary tract and cardiovascular system. Commonly formulated in combination with meglumine to reduce osmolality and improve patient tolerance.
