FPS-ZM1 is primarily investigated for its potential in treating neurodegenerative diseases, especially Alzheimer’s disease. It functions by targeting the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE), which plays a key role in transporting amyloid-beta peptides across the blood-brain barrier and promoting neuroinflammation. By inhibiting RAGE, FPS-ZM1 reduces the accumulation of amyloid-beta in the brain, improves cerebral blood flow, and helps preserve blood-brain barrier integrity. This leads to improved cognitive function in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease. Due to these effects, FPS-ZM1 is considered a promising candidate for developing therapies aimed at slowing or modifying the progression of Alzheimer’s and possibly other conditions involving neuroinflammation and oxidative stress.
