Used primarily as a precursor in the synthesis of germanium-containing materials, especially in the production of germanium dioxide (GeO₂) thin films via sol-gel processes or chemical vapor deposition (CVD). These films are applied in optical fibers to modify refractive index and enhance transmission efficiency. Also utilized in the preparation of hybrid organic-inorganic coatings with good thermal and mechanical stability. Its reactivity makes it suitable for catalyzing certain organic transformations and in the fabrication of semiconductor materials where controlled germanium incorporation is required.
