Used primarily in the management of hypertension, this compound acts by inhibiting the release of norepinephrine from sympathetic nerve endings, leading to reduced peripheral vascular resistance and lower blood pressure. It was historically prescribed for severe or resistant high blood pressure, especially when other treatments were ineffective. Due to its significant side effect profile, including orthostatic hypotension, diarrhea, fluid retention, and sexual dysfunction, its use has declined and is now rarely prescribed with the development of newer antihypertensive agents. It has also been used experimentally in research settings to study sympathetic nervous system function and neurotoxicity.
