Used primarily as a brominated flame retardant in polymers and resins, especially in high-impact polystyrene, ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), and other engineering plastics. Its high bromine content makes it effective at suppressing flame propagation by releasing bromine radicals during thermal decomposition, which interrupt the combustion process. Commonly found in electronic enclosures, circuit boards, and electrical components where fire safety is critical. Also used in textile coatings and industrial adhesives requiring enhanced flame resistance. Due to environmental and toxicity concerns, its use is regulated in some regions and being phased out in favor of more environmentally friendly alternatives.
